I added some new entries
tonight. I have a few more I want to add soon. I am blogging about my
work and what I offer. I also am going to blog about interesting stuff
besides jewelry. I also blog about other artists work. I am currently
looking for artists to feature on my blog. I am offering my time and
free advertisement. Please check out my crafting blog and let me know
if you might be interested. I will consider all inquires but all will
not be approved. If you do quality work... you have a better chance of
being blogged. Sorry... don't know how to put it politely. I'm very
busy but try to set time aside to blog. I want to blog about quality...
not quantity. There are many factors that come into play. I'm new at
blogging and hope my upcoming entries will be of some interest.

My new blog...

http://crazyaboutcrafting.wordpress.com/

Matthew Nix

Looking for a few great books!!

I am looking jewelry-making books on all aspects of the craft. Seed Beads, Wire Working, Pearls, General, Crystal, etc. Does anyone have any recommendations? I read the reviews on Amazon but I am never too sure of those so I figured I would ask here.

The main difference between silk thread and wire is that silk is highly absorbent while wire is not. Dirt accumulated in the drill holes due to the use of wire will result in quality pearls losing their luster. This problem is greatly reduced when quality pearls are strung on silk thread. When the thread becomes dirty or if spaces between the pearl and knot occur, it is time to restring the necklace.

As Russ Nobbs had mentioned, knotted necklace should be restrung depending on how often the wearer wears it.

There are a variety of materials to knot pearls. Pure silk could be used if you are stringing high quality pearls. Pearl silk is also available now, being a blend of pure silk and polyester thread. For mineral and imitation pearls, you could use polyester thread, nylon thread or a mix of both these materials, called "stringth" thread.

Also, a fully knotted pearl necklace has the advantage of not spilling the pearls everywhere should it snap; only one pearl would slip out if that were the case.

I hope this information is useful to you! All the best in your stringing endeavors.

I have made a couple bracelets only to have them break apart. I suspect it's because I'm not using the appropriate sized crimp tubes with the corresponding wire sizes. Can someone break this down for me like I'm a 2yr old, maybe some sort of table, and save me from stringing...and then re-stringing?

This is great for anyone who has their own art to sell and doesn’t want to pay a big booth fee. Their shows are the 2nd Sunday of every month now through October. I did very well there. Another good place would be The Blue Orchid flower shop in Orange. Their booth fee there is 45 dollars and their shows are the first Saturday of every month. I tried the swap meet, but didn’t do well. I'd love to hear where you sold and what kind of luck you had.

Granted, it will scratch if handled roughly so you must use nylon tipped pliers to manipulate the wire. I've been working with Artistic Wire for about 6 months and and satisfied with the results. The Brass Non-Tarnish wire is a good substitute for gold wire.

Avoid A.W.'s Bare Copper wire - it looks great on the spool but quickly tarnishes, turning dark brown very quickly.

Breaking Necklaces

L.E.
