Never forget that by X3 you are able to then cover all those little costs to you that ADD UP!

Do not I REPEAT DO NOT, under price yourself, one of a sellers most abused self-destructing and undermining things to do. WHY?

because you are undervaluing yourself, your work and your talent! Not everyone is willing to take the time and materials to do it themselves... I have in the past had many 'friends' ask me to show them HOW TO do something. I am polite and tell them ok, but they must get the materials to do so. We go shopping and they SEE how much they need whether it is sewing or beading... from tools, to materials to the beads themselves. They will usually try one project, then ask me to DO the rest for them... we work out a deal and (sometimes free for friends) or they give me the materials and I make them something as a thank you. I know the cost - they do not.

When dealing with 'potential customers' who want to 'know how' to do something I am polite and in a similar way explain how to do it. I find I get more customers & friends this way. Sometimes I find a new beading buddy! Which is just as good!!!

Necklace

New Crafting Blog

I started a blog a few weeks ago. I added some new entries
tonight. I have a few more I want to add soon. I am blogging about my
work and what I offer. I also am going to blog about interesting stuff
besides jewelry. I also blog about other artists work. I am currently
looking for artists to feature on my blog. I am offering my time and
free advertisement. Please check out my crafting blog and let me know
if you might be interested. I will consider all inquires but all will
not be approved. If you do quality work... you have a better chance of
being blogged. Sorry... don't know how to put it politely. I'm very
busy but try to set time aside to blog. I want to blog about quality...
not quantity. There are many factors that come into play. I'm new at
blogging and hope my upcoming entries will be of some interest.

My new blog...

http://crazyaboutcrafting.wordpress.com/

Matthew Nix

Re: Designing sets vs. single items

Hold the phone! I make mostly earring and necklace sets and find people love getting the earrings (they think for free!) with a necklace. If they're not so crazy about the earrings, I suggest giving them as a gift. If the earrings prove a deal breaker, I'll offer to take the earring s and charge $10 less. Of course, the cost is all built in, so I'm not losing anything. Recently, a customer wanter a tourmaline necklace without the earrings. I took $20 of for that sale and sold the earrings later that same day for $48.

As for a matching bracelet, I sometimes make them, sometimes not, but it's nice to offer it as an "add on" when closing the sale. Or, "Did you see the ring that will match your set perfectly?"

If you don't make sets, be sure to have some "add ons" whether it be earrings, bracelets or rings" when closing the sale.

Re: keshi (keishe?) pearls

Hi,

Yes, Fire Mountain Gems usually sell Keishi Pearls. This company sells them too.

Where have you sold your jewelry?

For me it was at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton. This is great for anyone who has their own art to sell and doesn’t want to pay a big booth fee. Their shows are the 2nd Sunday of every month now through October. I did very well there. Another good place would be The Blue Orchid flower shop in Orange. Their booth fee there is 45 dollars and their shows are the first Saturday of every month. I tried the swap meet, but didn’t do well. I'd love to hear where you sold and what kind of luck you had.

Thank you! I told my husband to remove QVC and HSN for a variety of reasons. Before he removed them from the list of channels we can view, I took a look at their jewelry shows and I was impressed by the beauty and workmanship of what I saw. Sterling silver and the semi-precious gemstones are very popular in chain styles and in beaded styles. Also, the designers of the various lines discuss what's new now and what's going to be popular for the next season.

I found the shows very informative and I learned a technique for lengthening a necklace or bracelet with appropriate-sized jump rings or chains. I saw several bracelets where one end of the bracelet had an inch or so of chain (or jump rings) to make the length longer. This was apparent when I got a glimpse of the 7.25 and 8 inch size bracelets. Less chain or jump rings on the shorter bracelet.

I never thought of that. I want to try this technique when I use wire guards to ensure the beading wire will not come loose from the jump rings. I think it is a good idea and I'll keep looking at QVC and HSN. I hope my will power to not to purchase stays strong though.

Re: Beadalon Scrimps

Thanks for the reply.

My class and I had so much trouble with the foldover crimps last Thursday that I've finally given up on them. I have been using the same crimping pliers since last fall 2007. I'm wondering for how long they work well as I didn't have any trouble making foldover crimps when we first starting using these pliers. The 2x2 reinforced sterling silver crimp tubes were from Artbeads.

I'm going to start using the twisted crimps from Artbeads for the classes and sell the twisted crimps to my students and that should take care of the problem.

I will try the scrimps to see how they hold up.

Re: Beadalon Scrimps

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll continue to use the foldover crimp tubes as this is the kind that is available locally for my students. Maybe I will try a thicker wire - 19 strand. Perhaps the thicker wire is better to use with the foldover crimps and still thin enough to use with most beads.
