So we devoted an entire issue to bracelets, 52 bracelets in fact (one for each week of the year). The bracelets we selected for the cover represent the wide range of supplies in this special issue: pearls, gemstones and inexpensive gemstone look-alikes, blown glass, crystals, and big resin nuggets. There’s more inside, including Lucite, wood beads, charms, lampworked glass, even buttons and bows!

And since you ate up our previous special issue 365 Earrings (to be released as a book in October), we made two pairs of earrings to coordinate with each bracelet. I bought two pairs of leaves (for earrings), and then spent the next hour poring over gold charms and gemstones for my ocean-themed bracelet. From the Sea Life collection, I chose a starfish and a sand dollar; both are real. And I liked how the CZ-accented gold disk and sea turtle added some sparkle. (Let's pretend he's a sea turtle, even though my top-of-mind turtle is terrestrial.) The round chain links extend the nautical theme, as does the toggle clasp that reminds me of a life preserver.

Even though we've got beautiful designs in 52 Bracelets, I felt a little left out when there wasn't room for another charm bracelet. So consider this the 53rd bracelet (or a bonus
bracelet, if that's easier). By the way, we've been having fun coming up with factoids for our special issue. Did you know: A sea turtle cannot retract its head and limbs the way a land turtle can.

Turquoise drops

Old habits die hard. While I was in L.A. last week, my sister and I stopped at Ritual Adornments (where I took my first jewelry making class). I found this strand of turquoise drops (on that very wall that's in the photo, in fact) — and loved the earthy, natural colors. Even though it's pretty easy to find turquoise beads, I haven't come across this shape before. So I'm excited to use it in a bracelet project for our upcoming special issue, 52 Bracelets. I'll be whipping up the bracelet this week, but the issue will be on newsstands in mid August.

Two new tips for giving jewelry gifts

I recently gave my aunt a bracelet for her birthday. When she unwrapped the strand of colorful polymer clay frogs and gunmetal findings, I said what I always say when I give the gift of handmade jewelry: “If it’s too big or too small – I can fix it.”

Only this was the first time I had to put my money where my mouth is – the bracelet was indeed a tad too big.

Now came the tricky part. With my aunt wearing the bracelet, we began pinching and pulling at the strand, first overlapping the ends one way, then another, trying to figure out how much shorter the bracelet needed to be. We took a guess, but I won’t know for sure if it was a good guess until this weekend when I can return the bracelet to my aunt.

Things would have been much easier if I had only brought along a soft measuring tape! I could have easily looped it around her wrist to find the perfect length, then adjusted the bracelet with confidence. From now on, I’m packing a measuring tape in my purse whenever I give jewelry. After all, if I say I can fix it, I better have the right tools!

Also, my aunt made a request I never anticipated. As I pointed to the frog beads that would have to be removed, she said in a sad voice, “Oh, but I don’t want to lose those.” Translation: “Don’t take those away from me! You were going to give them to me if the bracelet fit!” I promised I would find something else to do with the beads.

One solution would have been to make a dangle for the clasp, but there were too many beads for that. Another solution could be matching earrings, but my aunt prefers a favorite pair of studs to drop earrings. Instead, I strung the beads on head pins and attached them to different lengths of silver and gunmetal chain. Then I attached the chains to a keychain ring. That way my aunt can always have the beads close by, even when she’s not wearing her bracelet.

Do you have any other tips for giving handmade jewelry? Please share them below, as well as the stories that inspired your aha moment.

Trend watching: Rupa Balachandar’s cuffs

Here at BeadStyle, part of our jobs is to keep our fingers on the pulse of the fashion industry.
