About Barbara

From the time I was very young, I wanted to be a designer. I always looked at colors and shapes are art in adornment of the body. My medium was fabric, then I went into the aesthetics profession and it was ink and lasers to beautify the face and body. While this is still my love and passion, in the last 2 years I have discovered a new medium of beads, gemstones and working with metal. For the last 5 years, I have been traveling to Southeast Asia doing work for our non profit organization Give Children A Choice. During this time I was exposed to the many uses of bright colors and styles of the native people in this part of the world. While they are poor in material things, they make up for it in close relationships and bonds within their communities. I guess that's pretty priceless. Being exposed to their jewelry and ethnic wear has made me very aware of what and how I want to wear my jewelry. I am still a newbie in the art of jewelry making, but this path has certainly brought me much joy and self satisfaction after I have toiled to make something so beautiful to be adorned by someone who can appreciate my style and taste. I am mostly self taught from books and magazines. About 2 months ago, I took up a metalsmithing class with a young innovative jewelry artist by the name of Shane Yamane. Since that time, I have combined by beading with sterling silver and sterling silver. I hope to get better and start a line of my own one day.
