Are you a by the book-follow the pattern beader?

Or are you a I'm going to do what the beads tell me do beader?

I had every intention of making a bracelet today. I drew a pattern. I had the pattern out. I had the beads out.

I ended up with a bead and chain necklace. And I am tempted to make earrings.....

I usually follow a pattern, but let the beads tell me the colors to use.

I never use a pattern, just dump out the beads in a color scheme I want to work with and start playing. Although I do make notes of my patterns for the future and always take pictures. Since I photograph everything for my website, I always have a record of patterns I have created. So if I get stumped for something new, I can revisit and modify previous designs.

I am what I like to call an "intuitive" beader.  I almost NEVER know how what I've started is going to turn out.  There ARE a few exceptions - but 99% of the time I start out with the good intention of following a pattern, only to find my mind giving me another totally awesome direction to take it in!   I always have people commenting and complimenting me on my pieces BECAUSE of the creative license I've taken. 
Don't be afraid to stray....it's more fun that way!

I usually start with a bead that I want to use because of its appealing characteristics. Then I pair it with three or four others that complement or contrast with it on the colour wheel. Sometimes its the focal bead I use for inspiration. Other times its an outfit or a favourite colour that drives the process. My bead stash dictates what I do as I am least 90 minutes drive from my favourite bead store. I have yet to complete a piece from a pattern. I have begun incorporating mixed media handmade beads into my work.

 Pattern? There is such a thing? Just kidding. I've found that drawing out a pattern just causes the universe to laugh hysterically. I usually end up with something that has no relation at all to what I thought I was going to work on. And normally the newly inspired design is much more creative than what I'd planned.

Last night was an example. I started a plan using pink and an interesting peachy color...hahaha what I finished with was a 2 strand lapis and amethyst twist that is stunning.

Many years ago I designed clothes, and would draw out a design at night. The next day when I started working, the fabric took over and always became something completely different. I found it best to let the materials tell you what they want...Michaelangelo said basically that inside each stone was a statue waiting to be let loose (paraphrased)

Of course!  What fun would it be following a pattern, even if it is your own? The act of creating something is always dynamic or its merely mimicry!
