What is this gemstone?

With so much talk on the forum lately about gemstones and their proper names, I thought it might be helpful to have a thread where people can post pictures of their gems and ask questions. You can use this if you have a gemstone you haven't identified at all, or if you've been given a name but you're unsure if it's legitimate.

Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for this thread.

What is the best way to determine how much you should price your pieces?

Plated findings...what's your opinion?

When I first started beading, I bought plated findings, because I wasn't ready to invest in either sterling silver, or gold filled/solid gold. Now, I am ready, but the expense is still a concern.

My question is, have you used plated findings? How did they wear over time? With gold, did they actually flake, etc.?

My silver plated clasps have certainly tarnished...although I haven't tried polishing them up yet, not sure if they will come back to their original look.

Suggestions for digital camera?

I want to get a digital camera but I don't know what to look for so it'll take good pics of jewelry.

I've heard someone talk about a 'macro' setting. What's that?

If you haven't already guess, I don't know enough to know what to ask about!

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated....thanks!

Taking good clear pictures

I looked through all of your pictures and not only is the jewelry beautiful, but the pictures are so clear. I use a digital camera (actually 2 different ones with diff. megapixls) and NONE of mine are coming out so close and clear. What are the secrets? Please help!

To help limit the number of threads in this forum, members are not allowed to start new posts. You can, however, reply to threads that are already here.

Posts will be moved to the FAQ folder at the members' and moderators' discretion. If you know of a thread that you think should be in here, please e-mail a link to lhaedt@beadstylemag.com, and I will move it to this forum.

Building a positive community

Guidelines for building a positive community:

1.) Be positive. Constructive criticism is allowed. Rude, antagonistic comments are not; they are grounds for a warning.

2.) If you don't like a member's posts, then don't read them. Leave them alone. If you have multiple conflicts with the same member, stop posting on each other’s threads.

3.) If you feel that a forum member is breaking the forum rules, report it using the "Report Abuse" button located at the bottom righthand corner of each post.

4.) If you feel the need to address a personal problem with a fellow forum member, contact them off the forum. Any personal correspondence that takes place in this manner is just that — personal. Posting a personal e-mail on the forum will result in a warning.

5.) If a conflict develops, notify the moderator then leave it alone. Every post on a flame thread, no matter how well intended, contributes to the bandwagon effect and keeps the post at the top of the list.

6.) A thread that starts out innocently can sometimes degenerate into a flame thread. If this happens, the person who started the thread should request that people drop the subject immediately. This request should be a red flag to other members that posting on that thread is no longer allowed — no apologies, no last words, just leave it alone until a moderator can lock it.
