    Confidence when just starting out

I just wondering if some of you could give a newbie like me some advice on building confidence with my work. I will make something then doubt the way it looks or I think my creation is too plain. I've also been having a creative block. My family and friends tell me that they look good, but I think they are only saying it so they won't hurt my feelings.

Did anyone else go through this phrase or is still going through it?

Yes, that was me when I first started, and almost every time I make a piece of jewlery!  If you are making to sell, I would suggest hosting a show in your home and inviting friends, neighbors etc.  Your confidence will come when they actually purchase your jewelry!

Also, wear your jewelry, and when someone asks about it don't be shy about telling them you made it.

When making your jewelry, slowly add in new components that may be a little less conservative.  Experiment with different color combinations and different textures.  Look at the inspiration pages on sites like Fusionbeads.com, Firemountain Gems and other bead vendors.  Also, start looking at the webistes of the members of these forums for some great inspiration so you can eventually step out of your comfort zone.

Don't forget to show us some of your work!  Alice

Whenever I try/start any new type of artwork, I'm unsure of myself because although I can see a finished piece in my mind, I don't have the specific skill or talent to bring it out (yet!).  Once I've learned methods & media/materials, there is no stopping me!  I'm almost always pleased with my results and if not, I just start over.

Confidence is something that comes from within.  As you continue to learn & create, I'm sure yours will blossom!

As far as inspiration, mine comes from just about anything: a beautiful bead, the colours in my favourite dress, the chain & gears on a bicycle (that inspired a cool bracelet/earring set)  Just keep your eyes open & notice everything!  Good luck!

Re: Confidence when just starting out

I think everyone goes through this phase - I'm NOT a newbie - have been beading since '92, and doing shows most of that time.    It takes time, and it takes patience.  I still have some of the pieces that I made when I first started out, that I've never sold - so believe me, it doesn't happen overnight.  I look at them and see how my creativity has developed over time.   The important thing is to NOT GIVE UP.  Find a niche - do home parties among your friends and relatives -  SELL to your friends and family - don't always give them away.  (My mother now INSISTS on paying me for her jewels.)   If you can afford the table fees, do craft shows and fairs.     Blocks are also something that happens to everyone - so don't get discouraged.  For creative block - Use the BEAD & FASHION MAGS.  TV.  NATURE.  Some of my best pieces have come after sitting on the beach or in the park for awhile.  And I'm almost always inspired by my new magazines when I get them. Use them to keep up with the trends.  Right now it is everything VINTAGE and Filligree.   Most importantly - have FUN.   And don't give up - I stuck with it and now have my own bead and jewelry store, have had a project published in one of the mags, have a piece featured in one of the inspiration books, AND have pieces on exhibit and sale at one of the local art galleries.  I am now confident that my beadwork is worthwhile.  SO stick with it - and most importantly - HAVE FUN!

Thanks for all the advice. I think the party for family and friends is a great idea. I posted a picture of one of my necklaces in the "Show your us your work" bulletin.

     Thanks Again

I felt the same way you did when i was first starting out, but as i been wearing my pieces lately people have been noticing the most simple things that i would not even think would be noticed.Just keep in mind everyone has different taste and may like something plain or a little more bold. Jewlery making is a art. As you become more skilled you will have a different outlook and start to see what works for what type of style. If someone compliments you on your work suggest making a piece for them you will be surprised how just making one piece for someone can inspire you to make many more. How about making custom pieces for a person with their choice of color and style in mind. If they like it and will wear it then don't worry.Good Luck
