    Necklace Lengths

How do you decide what lengths to make your necklaces? What are the most popular lengths that people buy from you?

How about bracelets? What's the most popular length?

Earrings - do most people buy the shorter earrings or do they like longer ones? I read that hoops are popular for the Fall, do you make hoops? Do you decorate manufactured hoops with small beads?

I sure would like to know and I'm sure others would like to know as well.

    Re: Necklace Lengths

I make necklaces adjustable from 18" to 20". Long necklaces just don't sell for me, so I don't even bother making them.

I love long earrings, but most people want, and buy, shorter lengths.

Hoops may be in (when are they not?) but I don't worry about what's "in". I make what I like and what I know will sell for me.

I don't use any manufactured findings, except for chain and my bracelet clasps. If I want to decorate a finding with dangles, I make the finding first.

Thanks for the reply. It's good to know that most people like short earrings.

    Re: Necklace Lengths

A lot of my customers want a shorter necklace so it sits just above the neckline of their shirt.  I do 16 in, 17 in ( I know it's not a standard length but people like it) and 18 in.  I've made a few 20, but nothing longer yet as they don't want to pay the price.

I tend to make my bracelets at around 7 inches long, give or take, and offer to resize if necessary.  So far it's been the perfect size.  However, that 7 inches is depending on the size of beads.  Larger beads tend to require more length to fit even a 7 inch wrist.

I make both short and long earrings, since my customer base ranges from young to old, and every age in between.  I'd like to get into hoops, but haven't yet--though I know they are popular.

Thanks peachtree for the information. I'll start making a few 17 to 19 inch necklaces. Now I need to find more trigger-type clasps.

    Re: Necklace Lengths

I've been making mine 16-18" with extenders on them.  I tend to make them shorter and tell the customer that they can always wear it longer with the extender.

    Re: Necklace Lengths

I had this question about necklaces too, so I created a survey about jewelry preferences before I sent an electronic invitation for a home show. Surprisingly, the preference was evenly distributed between 16-22 inch lengths. There was only 1 respondendent who indicated an opera length (30+in).
