    Tibetan Silver Bali Question?

Has any one purchased Tibetan silver before? I just purchased some the other day, but I don't know how well the quality is.

    Thanks!

    Re: Tibetan Silver Bali Question?

Tibet and Bali are very different parts of the world. Beads from Bali, Indonesia are usually at least 92.5% silver. "Bali Style" is the name most of us use for beads that look like Bali beads but are made in other parts of the world.

So called "Tibetan Silver" is probably NOT made in Tibet and  most likely contains NO silver at all.

Some  "Tibetan Silver" sold out of China is cast from lead based pewter. Some "Tibetan Silver" may be cast from Zinc alloy. Some "Tibetan Silver" is an alloy of copper and zinc.

If you google the phrase "What is tibetan silver" you can see more articles supporting this. Watch out for sellers sites with descriptions like "some parts silver, and mostly copper and other metals." Those don't say the actual % of silver so you have to assume there is ZERO% silver.

"Tibetan Silver," German SIlver, and Nickel Silver  are just  names for silver/white colored metal that contain NO silver.

I'm not sure what your suppliers are like in the US, but 'German silver' in Australia is actually silver plated copper.  That being said, the silver plating is very strong, and takes a LOT of effort to scrape or scratch off!  I use it for medium range work, especially clasps and wire-wrap if the stone or bead hasn't cost me a fortune!  I've been earing a particular bracelet constantly for several weeks and the silver is only just beginning to show through.

Tibetan silver?  It doesn't even look like silver, is not very sturdy and looks NOTHING like any silver I've seen.  Its only  claim to silver is that it looks marginally more like silver than a rock!
