Trade beads

A few weeks back I went to the Rings & Things Wholesale Bead Tour. These are two strands that I purchased. Aren't they beautiful?

I've never seen anything quite like them.

I want to research a bit more about these beads from Ethiopia, and possibly feature them in a design, perhaps for a future issue of BeadStyle as a Beads of Change feature. I've been fascinated with trade beads for some time and am currently working on a design using glass trade beads that will be in the January issue. It's so interesting – and often quite sad – to learn about the historical and cultural significance of beads in Africa.

If you are interested in learning more about beads and are in the Phoenix area, check out The Bead Museum on Wednesday October 21st. Lois Dubin, author of The History of Beads for a cocktail reception, lecture, and book signing.

I don't think the Ethiopian beads pictured above contain any gold...mainly only copper and brass

alloys. I believe the beads may have been incorrectly tagged as gold and copper,  R&T/Russ will be able to clarify the actual contents. Secondly I think the term trade beads usually only refer to glass beads...I'm not sure if metal beads also fall into the category.

The large copper beads in the second picture come in strands 28-30 inches long. These beads are islamic rosaries and contain 66 beads and one long bead called the imame.

I love Ethiopian metal beads as they have a very earthy feel to them!

I am not sure there is any gold in these beads, even though they are marked so,  from what I understand these beads are made with copper and brass based alloys. Maybe R&T/Russ can verify the contents!

What I know about the beads in the second photo are that they are islamic rosary beads.....often sold in strands 28-30" inches and contain about 66 beads and one long Imamee bead.

Another thing is that I've usually seen only glass beads from the african continent (made locally or imported from the czech) refered to as Trade beads and am not sure that metal beads fall under the same category!
