Displaying your jewelry at home

Here at BeadStyle, we have a nice, big display case to show off many jewelry pieces that have been featured in the magazine, from our first cover project to some recent favorites.

As you may remember, I recently moved into my own apartment. While I have managed to establish a functional creative space in my living room, my next task is thinking of a fun, funky, and practical way to store my growing jewelry collection.

I want my jewelry to be at arm's reach as I'm getting ready in the morning, otherwise I simply forget to accessorize. I want it to be organized and not all piled in a box in a huge knot (as it is now).

The now-defunct Domino magazine and the amazing decorating blog, Apartment Therapy, have helped me get some creative juices flowing in this department. Check out the pictures below of awesome and inspiring home jewelry organization.

How do you display your jewelry? On coat-rack-like handles? In a compartmented case? Draped elegantly over a mirror? Hung on the wall like art?

So many great ideas here. I'm currently liking the eclectic feel of the first picture. I'll let you know what direction I end up taking.

I also needed a place to store my finished jewelry.  I have an old leatherette covered box my dad gave me about 45 years ago that hold small pieces from the past, but for my hand crafted work, I went to a discount store and bought two free standing jewelry armoires. One is about 4 feet tall, with ring slots under the top and 9 divided drawers all the way to the floor. Also has two sides that open to many necklace hooks. Total $129. The other is about as tall, with 5 drawers, ring slots under the lid and two sides that hold many necklaces on hooks.  Total $79.  I get a lot of storage for the approximately 3 sq. feet of floor space.  They are not great furniture, but they protect my jewelry from scratches and tangles.   Many of the pieces are silver, and I will tuck them into zip-lock bags with a square of anti-tarnish cloth. The two tall storage pieces are only for finished jewelry.  I store working stock in rolling Sterlite drawer units.  I buy as a strand or finding grabs me, so I have lots of storage for stock.  I sort this by color and material.

I purchased a long rectangular poster frame from a discount store and pulled out the glass and backing. I had a piece of peg board cut to fit inside and then painted the whole ensemble white (you could paint it in any manner to match your décor). I hung it on the wall next to my closet, put a line of peg board hooks across the top, and now my necklaces are not only orderly and tangle-free, but also beautifully displayed for me to choose while getting dressed in the morning. The great thing about the peg board method is you can use any frame of any size and it can be customized to what you want to display (bracelets, earrings, belts, scarves, etc) depending on how you arrange your hooks. You could even do a few frames in a collage format in bright colors. It elevates your jewelry to a piece of art hanging on the wall and makes it so accessible while getting ready.

For earrings I wear often, I took a small table-top frame (from the Dollar Store no less!) and removed the glass. I covered the backing with a piece of batting and a fun piece of fabric and then glued horizontal pieces of ribbon across the fabric. I layered them for an interesting look, reassembled the frame, and voila – a cool earring display to sit on top of the dresser. I hook my earrings over the ribbon (doesn’t work so well with post earrings, though, but most of mine are dangly) and they’re neatly organized for my viewing pleasure!

These projects are easy to do, don’t require many tools, and the materials are easy to find for not much money (especially with yard sale season starting up!). They can be tailored to coordinate with your existing room décor or can add a funky punch of color. Your imagination is the limit!

I hang my longer necklaces on a mug rack that is mouted on the wall next to my dresser. The rack (kind of an accordion style thing) was designed to hang mugs on, but I like it for my necklaces.  I have a revolving jewelry stand on the dresser for shorter necklaces & bracelets (but it is about full). I'd like to find a way to display my earrings, which are currently in the jewelry box.  I like the last photo with the fabric covered boards on the wall-that's an idea I may copy!
