October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Each October dozens of world-famous landmarks are illuminated in pink light in order draw attention to the importance of mammography screening for early diagnosis of breast cancer. These photos are of past landmarks:
Sand Hotel–Macao, China
Niagara Falls
Ontario, Canada
Azrieli Towers
Tel Aviv Israel
Miriam Fuld lives in Israel and may have been influenced by these pink towers when she designed the pink ribbon necklace in BeadStyle's November issue. You'll love this necklace if you like making plain loops or if you want to fashionably bring attention to breast cancer awareness.
Pink ribbons products are purchased, especially during October, to raise awareness about the disease. Many well- intentioned consumers purchase these products thinking their dollars are being used to help fund legitimate breast cancer charities. Be wary of companies that try to strengthen their image and boost their revenue by associating themselves with a charitable cause. A few do so by promoting products that indirectly contribute to the disease.
Unlike the types of companies mentioned, here are a few companies that appear to be thinking pink in October:
David Yurman is donating 10% of the proceeds from the sale of his pink-and-red signature Cable Candy bracelet to breastcancer.org.
Joan Hornig is donating 100% of the profits from any accessory purchase to the breast cancer charity of your choice.
The Bead Peddler is donating 10% of profits from their pink ribbon rosaries and jewelry to the American Cancer Society.
Choose Hope donates approximately 10% of their total monthly sales to a variety of leading cancer research institutions.
Fire Mountain Gems and Beads is donating 100% of the proceeds of their Circle of Hope beads to cancer research. These beads have been donated by lampwork artists and are one of a kind.
If you come across any other companies that are positively thinking pink in October, please let us know.
