High Interest Day

Senior editor Naomi Fujimoto and I participated in High Interest Day at a local elementary school this morning. In addition to our beading class, the kids had the option of taking classes on magic, foreign languages, pizza-making, beauty school, hip hop, fire safety, yoga, and popcorn-making. It was a great experience — the kids were energetic and engaged, yet also respectful and well behaved. And they were all very creative!

As the kids were finishing up their bracelets at the end of the first hour, I asked if they planned on keeping them or giving them away as gifts. (Mother's Day is just around the corner, you know.) Almost every student responded with an enthusiastic "Keeping them!"

I was pleased that the kids liked their bracelets so much, and their reply made me think about my own tendency to give away most of the jewelry I make. I love giving jewelry as gifts, and I think that most people really appreciate the thought and effort that goes into it. However, it might be time to start building my own jewelry stash a bit, too.

What about you? Do you prefer to keep your jewelry or share it with others? If you do both, how did you find the balance that is right for you?

I love the idea of giving jewelry away, but the reality is I have so little time to bead, that I rarely am able to finish things in time to give them away.  Most of the pieces I have finished have been done the night before (sometimes only minutes before) the event I am planning to wear them to.  I'm working on getting more time to bead.

I love the idea of giving pieces to my family and friends, but the reality is that I have so little time to bead, that I can rarely finish anything in time.  A number of the pieces I have made for myself were finished  only hours (once, only minutes) before I have to leave for the event.  And that time, I had to settle for plain earrings instead of the fabulous chandeliers I'd planned.  I'm getting another chance tomorrow, though - I took apart the tassel on the necklace, and I just realized that I want to wear it again tomorrow.  So maybe if I start tonight, I can finish the tassel and make the earrings.

The vast majority of my jewellery I gift or sell, but I do tend to keep those slightly "imperfect" examples!

You know, the original prototype that first physically manifests that idea you had in your head.

And even though the silver may be a little overworked, and the edges might not be finished as well as the piece for sale, it's special to me because it's the first one - take a look at a perfect example of a prototype, non-saleable, just for me item:

I'm still pretty new to beading so I've only given away one piece so far (a necklace).  I do have some beads that I bought to make a necklace and earrings for my mother-in-law...I hope to finish that project (plus several for myself) before her birthday this summer.  I love the idea of making lots of extra earrings to give away.  Maybe I'll be better about sharing once I have created more things for me!

About Lindsay Haedt

I joined BeadStyle magazine in June 2005. At that time, I had never worked with beads before, but that changed very quickly. Now, my favorite afternoons at work are the ones I spend working on projects. It always amazes me how relaxing (and fun!) it is to make jewelry. In addition to working on articles, I also handle the administrative work and the BeadStyle forum.
