Yesterday afternoon I was sitting home working (OK, I was making a necklace) and I got an email from a friend directing me to view the winners of The Washington Post's Sunday Source Peeps Diorama Contest. The first thing you have to know: I love Peeps. I love the chewy fresh ones. I love the crunchy stale ones. I love to put them in the microwave and make them explode. Naturally, I was completely distracted for the rest of Sunday and most of today. No matter what I was doing, some part of my brain was building my diorama entry for next year. and while this definitely sounds counterproductive. I also got a number of really great ideas for the magazine today.
I think creativity — even silly, pointless creativity — gets the brain working at a higher level for everything. Of course, if I start sewing little Peep outfits at my desk, I'm sure someone will challenge this theory, but I think it's important, when possible, to let my mind wander where it will. I usually love where it takes me.
