I spent quite a few enjoyable afternoons and evenings this past fall and winter teaching troops of Brownies and Girl Scouts to make jewelry. We had a ton of fun. Because they were beginners, I had them all make the same bracelet in different colors. If they were more experienced beaders — or I was a more experienced teacher — I would have loved to have them express their own individual style more. These girls were all such creative and unique personalities. It would have been great to see what they would have come up with. For me, making something that expresses your personality is half of the fun.
Our first special section, Your Perfect Look, represented a version of that theme. It's projects were designed to flatter different face shapes and necklines. It was something completely new for us — and for beading publications in general — and was very popular. Four more special publications — and more than a dozen regular issues — later, I had sort of forgotten about YPL.
Like a perrennial spring flower, it recently popped up in my office in a brand new form. Our books department has turned it into Jewelry Just for You! And I have to say (though I'll admit to being a bit biased) it makes a darn fine book. If you missed the magazine version, take a look at the book. There are some great projects as well as information on face-flattering jewelry. I especially love the jewelry designed for turtlenecks - I never knew what to do with a turtle and often just skipped jewelry altogether.
