Playing with color

A couple weeks ago while I was checking out the Hobby Lobby Web site, I came across a fun PDF that is all about color. Follow the link, then click on "Color Brochure" at the bottom of the page. It's been a while — probably fourth or fifth grade — since I've had any formal training on using the color wheel, so this was a great refresher. And, best of all, it urged me to be a little bit more adventurous with my color choices.

Where do you find inspiration for your color choices?

I don't think about color formally (though it would be cool to take a class). I get inspiration from food and design magazines, especially Domino. It's helpful to see not just how they use colors, but what proportions they use (what's the main color vs. the accents). I've also found inspiration from TV — seeing what people are wearing. And, I really like the use of color in Sponge Bob. I haven't seen that many episodes, but there was one where they used blue violet, fuchsia, and yellow (iolite, ruby, and gold?).

Thank you for your comments, Naomi. I tend to use the color wheel only ocassionally — usually when I already have a certain color bead and I'm not sure what to pair it with. I definitely agree with your approach, though. Color is everywhere, and there's no limit to where one can find inspiration.

About Lindsay Haedt

I joined BeadStyle magazine in June 2005. At that time, I had never worked with beads before, but that changed very quickly. Now, my favorite afternoons at work are the ones I spend working on projects. It always amazes me how relaxing (and fun!) it is to make jewelry. In addition to working on articles, I also handle the administrative work and the BeadStyle forum.
