Frugality can be beautiful

I’ve been shopping recently for projects for our Under $25 special and I’ve been making some really cool discoveries. First of all, you can make beautiful jewelry without spending a lot of money. All right, I knew that before — but I didn’t know it would be this easy.

I’m not saying I won’t get all tingly the next time I see a spectacular strand of expensive gemstones, but I love that there are so many more great options out there.

There are some really innovative lines of reasonably priced beads and components available at the better-known big-box craft stores.

I was particularly thrilled to see the “Lost and Found” line that I fell in love with last summer at the Craft & Hobby Association annual conference in Chicago.

It’s full of vintage-looking charms, fun base-metal components, cameos, and other “found objects.”

Also cool: The bright Beadilicious line. It couldn’t be more different then “Lost and Found” – except that they both gave me the uncontrollable urge to throw many, many items into my shopping cart.

Finding a (beautiful) bargain is more satisfying now than it used to be. This must be the next inevitable step in my long journey of turning into my mother.

What’s your favorite “deal”? Who has free shipping? Where can you find single gemstones? Or half strands? Are you willing to share your secrets?
