Shopping for BeadStyle's next special issue

This weekend, I went to Hobby Lobby for the first time. The closest store (in West Bend) is about half an hour away, which is why I haven't been there till now. I was on a search for supplies for our next special issue (the theme: jewelry under $25). Even though I got distracted by Hobby Lobby's huge sale on Christmas ornaments, pillows, vases, and picture frames, I found lots of good jewelry-related stuff: 7-inch strands of coin pearls that I'll twist into a bracelet, sterling silver chains for charm bracelets, and glass bead mixes in spring-y shades of blue and green. My most triumphant buy: a one-pound tub of plastic beads in cute retro colors, which I picked up at the register. Everyone who comes into my office picks up the tub and points out their favorite shapes. Of course there are lots of puffy hearts; I can't wait to make something and bring the extras to a kids' class. Putting together jewelry for under $25 can be challenging (especially because I like gemstones), but I'm up for it. Let us know if you've got any tips or tricks for saving money when you shop; we welcome your suggestions.

I like to shop at Michaels and Jo-Ann Fabrics (don't laugh - they really do have some nice glass beads!) and use their 40% or 50% off coupons. And sometimes they have a whole group of bead supplies by manufacturer on sale - so when that happens I stock up. I don't think I've ever spent $25 on a necklace and earring set, even when using sterling or gold-filled beads and findings. And I have produced over 200 items in the past 3 years.

Being new to beading (I started in Nov. '07)  I haven't found any shops of just beads, yet.  I know they're out there but haven't gotten to them. To fill my ravenous needs for beads I have been shopping at Wal-Mart and Michael's.  I was pleasantly supprised  at the selection and quality of beads and supplies at Wal-Mart.  Michael's was excellent as always and carried all the things I needed that Wal-Mart didn't have, usually at a discount too.  I'm having a grand adventure and my wife is very happy with her expanded jewelry collection.

Thanks for the comments. I haven't checked Wal-mart, but I love both Michaels and Jo-Ann. I'm a big fan of coupon shopping (even though I do tend to get distracted by all other craft stuff, too!).
