Craft rooms

This past Saturday afternoon, my mom and I toured the Showcase of New Homes in Green Bay, Wis. This event, put on twice a year by the Brown County Home Builders Association, is an opportunity for people to walk through beautiful houses and ooh and aah at both the architecture and the decorating. For the local builders, it's an opportunity to show off their best work.

My mom and I have been going to the showcase for years now — it's become a tradition. And while I've come to expect theater rooms, exercise rooms, and even the occasional wine cellar, I saw something for the first time this year . . . a craft room.

The room was still unfurnished, but it had a nice little "craft room" sign so that everyone would know what the space was for. It had easy-to-clean tile floors and a utility sink right in the room. And, just as importantly, it had big windows to let in plenty of sunshine. Taking in the clean, bright colors, it was easy to imagine how that room could inspire creativity. Once the showcase is over and the owners move in, I think there will be many productive afternoons and evenings spent there.

So often, it seems, hobbies have to be squeezed in between all the necessities of life. I know that's how it is for me. But it was also nice to see a room that said, "Necessary or not, this important to me, and I'm setting aside a space for my creativity."

Personally, I do my beading in the living room in front of the television (usually with a cat on my lap trying to eat the beads). One of the things I like about this hobby is that it can keep my hands busy while I watch a movie. How about you? Do you have a room set aside for beading? Or does your beading blend in with the rest of your life? Would you even want a separate space for crafts?

I have taken over a bedroom in our house that is my craft room. It is also my office, it is where my computer is at. I have so many hobbies that I kind of NEED a room of my own to house my beads, yarn, fabric and anything else I decide I have to have.

That sounds like a very fun, creative space redkelley. Regardless of whether or not someone is a crafter, I think everyone needs a space to call their own. It sounds like that's just what you have.

My guest bedroom is my craft room.  I purchased a very large desk from IKEA and a bookcase and filled them with my beading stuff.  It is great because there is a small tv/dvd in the room so I can have something on while I work.  The cats hang out the bed and the dog is under my chair, which is great because when I was beading in the family room they were on my lap.

    Hi Juli,

I think your cats need to give my cats beading etiquette lessons ;-)

I also just purchased a desk and an huge armore and took them down stairs, where I have room set up with a TV and DVD also.  Have now turned this into my beading area, all my stuff is right there, and it is nice to have the TV on while beading, even if I don't really look up to watch,  And My cat also comes down every time I go down, and he sits and watches me for awhile, then curls up either on the recliner or the rocker and sleeps.  As soon as I put stuff away and head upstairs, he is right behind me.  It sure is great having his company while beading. Some times he likes to spread out across my beading board, under the warm lamp and go to sleep, which does make for difficult beading.

It sounds like you have quite the set-up, Roxie! Much more organized than me.

About Lindsay Haedt

I joined BeadStyle magazine in June 2005. At that time, I had never worked with beads before, but that changed very quickly. Now, my favorite afternoons at work are the ones I spend working on projects. It always amazes me how relaxing (and fun!) it is to make jewelry. In addition to working on articles, I also handle the administrative work and the BeadStyle forum.
