Only 106 jewelry-making days left . .

 'till Christmas.

It may seem crazy, but I've started making lists of Christmas presents already. Who will get jewelry? Who will get cookies? Who will get an encore of the very popular limoncello or grapefruit-cello I made last year?

I always try to get my shopping, as well as the game plan for the home-made stuff, done by Thanksgiving at the latest. I love the holiday season and I like to concentrate on the fun, creative, relaxing and social aspects instead of going crazy in a mall.

My Christmas season was kick-started this year when I received a book, "My Christmas Organizer" in the mail from it's publisher, Ryland, Peters & Small, for potential review.

The organizer ($19.95) is gorgeous — beautifully bound with glossy photographs. It tracks gifts given and received, decoration and recipe ideas, etc. With plenty of pockets and a space to record "memories." I've purchased holiday organizers before (I used to love the ones Hallmark used to give out — with the little stickers) but my system always ends up being a pile of clippings and post-its in a box.

I'm hoping to do better this year. Maybe this organizer will be the inspiration I need.  I'd at least like to record what jewelry I made for who so I don't duplicate the particularly well-received classics from year to year. I'm always looking for new ideas to really blow people away. What's has been your best home-made gift ever (jewelry or otherwise)?

I love doing Christmas shopping.  I start the day after.  I have a box of stuff already.  I have a list of things that I have gotten people already.

I made bracelets and necklaces for my family and friends last year.  I also make fudge too.

My mother loves home-made gifts and I've done my best to give her one every year for several years now. I have many many different hobbies so she never knows what she is going to get. But the biggest reaction I ever got from her was the year that my sister and I created a picture collage for her of our cat, Archie who had passed that year.

That is so sweet.  I want to do something like that for my mother but I want to use old pictures from Christmas passed when my mother was younger and with her bothers.

I love handmade gifts too.  I make lampwork glass whimsical Christmas ornaments for special people.  I try to find something that they either collect or love.  This year, I'm making a lot of dog portraits out of glass.

I think gifts that incorporate photos are always a hit. I recently have seen two new (for me) ways to use them. Associate editor Jane Konkel recently made a necklace in which she incorporated an old watch as a frame for tiny photo. Gorgeous.

Also, Art Jewelry Associate editor Jill Erickson taught a class in polymer clay photo transfer techniques (check out the January 2007 issue of Art Jewelry). I'll definitely be making some gifts using her techniques.
