Making jewelry: alone or with friends?

When our re-designed January issue comes out, we'll be including more information about our designers. Salena Safranski, who used to work for the Kalmbach Books department, designed a beautiful double-drilled pearl necklace and earrings. She's a big fan of coffee and says that her inspiration for the necklace was a latte! Also, Salena mentioned something interesting about her design process: "I prefer working on projects (beading, quilting, etc.) when I'm with other people, mainly because I like instant feedback." What about you? Do you like to bead in the company of friends? We'd love to hear more about what kind of beading environment you enjoy.

While I enjoy working on projects with my friends, as we obtain more and more "stuff" it is becoming harder to do.  I have one friend in particular that I do most of my beading with; she and I both have rather elaborate work areas set up in our homes.  In order to work together one of us (and it's usually her) has to pack up everything she thinks she might need and bring it to the other's home.  Invariably, she will have forgotten a key piece of a design, and more often than not goes home with several incomplete projects.  The other day we decided to go shopping togetther, but do our actual designing in our own homes.

I pretty much do my beading by myself.  I get more things done.

    I do both.

My friends and I formed a small beading club four years ago.  There are 12 of us.  We take turns to teach a project and/or host once a month.  It's usually on the third Saturday.  We work on a project, have a potluck lunch and talk all day.  It is so much fun.

Of course beading once a month is not enough. I enjoy beading by myself after I finish office and house work.

I teach beading so I enjoy beading with my students too.

I wonder if, as we grow out of being a beginner, the hobby turns more solitary? I'm not opposed to the social aspects of beading (the club sounds cool!), but I dread the idea of lugging all my stuff around. Also, I've found that I've gotten more picky about materials... I want to use a specific kind of head pin and half-hard wire and beading wire, so it's harder to be casual about just enjoying the process.
