Bead Artists Against Breast Cancer

A couple of months ago, I was given a wonderful opportunity. Along with some other Kalmbach employees, I got to help at the Bead Artists Against Breast Cancer auctions at the 2007 Bead&Button Show. Not only did beaders organize the auctions, but beaders also donated the items we auctioned off. From the time we arrived on Thursday to the time we left on Sunday, there was a steady stream of people dropping off donations. And we certainly shouldn’t overlook all of the enthusiastic beaders who bid on the items. In the end, the auctions raised over $21,000 for breast cancer research. But as exciting as that number is, it’s all the wonderful people behind the number that truly amaze me.

I’m sure you already know this, but I’m going to say it anyways: The beading community is incredibly generous and giving. I might just work for a hobby magazine, but when you come in contact with such amazing people everyday, you don’t need to join the Peace Corps to feel like you’re making a difference on occasion.

By the way, Bead Artists Against Breast Cancer also hold an online auction during the month of October. To contribute or participate, visit beadbabe.com.

Tell me some ways that you’ve seen beaders make a difference. Whether they’re big things or small, I think we’d all like to hear about them.

A  few years ago I designed a "breast cancer awareness" keychain to raise money for a local organization that raises money for research and to educate the public. To date I have raised over $1000 for this organization. I had many friends help me to assemble and sell the keychains. It's been a rewarding experiece.

About Lindsay Haedt

I joined BeadStyle magazine in June 2005. At that time, I had never worked with beads before, but that changed very quickly. Now, my favorite afternoons at work are the ones I spend working on projects. It always amazes me how relaxing (and fun!) it is to make jewelry. In addition to working on articles, I also handle the administrative work and the BeadStyle forum.
